| Medano Creek is one of the few surging rivers in the world. The wave pictured is a periodic surge, which occurs when the swift flow of the river pushes the sand substrate into small dams, which the water eventually overflows, and surges down the river. Medano Creek is ephemeral, only beginning to flow in the springtime from the Sangre De Cristo snowmelt (the mountains in the background), and drying up once the snow is melted. |
