| Every 13 years millions of these harmless insects simultaneously emerge from underground, crack out of their nymph exoskeletons and fly about for 2 months to mate before dying. There are so many present at once that they practically cover trees, and fill the air flying into cars, buildings and people. Groups of these produce such loud choruses that it leaves one's ears ringing. In this photo you can see small slits behind this female where she has poked her eggs into the wood.Share | |||||||
