In 2011 I wanted to create a new nature documentary, but it had to be close to home and easy to produce. Tiger Salamanders have a fascinating natural history and are common on the roads and fields of Ft. Collins after warm rains at night (but disappear underground thereafter) so I decided to make a film about Tiger Salamanders. However, in the population of Tiger Salamanders that this individual came from, I discovered a rare phenomenon called “neoteny” in which salamanders remaining permanently aquatic in their larval form and mature, breed and become quite large in their juvenile form.
