Between backpacking excursions I ventured through a small town in Chile near the tip of South America and came across this aging boat by day. It had such character than I contemplated how to photograph the vessel while capturing some drama. I decided to return late at night when the main cluster of the Milky Way would be due south behind the boat. The glow of the town behind me made capturing the radiance of the Milky Way challenging. Ironically, it cast the shadow of my camera and tripod, and me hunching over to stay out of frame, making this a self portrait of sorts. Though this wasn’t a big wilderness experience, it was still one of the most fun and dramatic experiences of my trip, as setting up my camera at midnight on the outskirts of town held its own sort of adventure.
