Mount Ngauruhoe on New Zealand’s North island was used for Mt. Doom in Lord of the Rings. Mt. Ngauruhow is located along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a 20km day hike up and over this volcanic mountain range. This shot was a welcomed surprise for me. Normally I research areas that I photography from all angles on Google earth, which admittedly removes some of the magic when I arrive. But in the hustle bustel of trying to cover ground while in New Zealand, I simply showed up to hike the Tongariro Crossing, not knowing what shots awaited. I realized that Mt. Doom was looming behind me when I hiked to the top of the Red Crater and turned around. It had such an obtrusive presence that for a moment I was thrust into the saga. In processing, I leaned more on the side of digital art to really make it look foreboding.
